Steel Shelving 101

First, we will begin with Clip-Type Steel Shelving, the most common and prevalent in today's market.

Steel Shelving usually consists of a "Starter-Unit" made up of 4 steel posts to which a series of roll-fromed steel shelves is connected, usually by a steel compression clip from the post to each corner of the shelf.  Once a "Starter Unit" is erected, "Add-On Units" can then be added which share the two posts on one side of the Starter Unit.  The use of "Add-On Units" saves in materials cost and adds stability to the shelving system as a whole.

Common sizes for steel shelving range from 6" to 24" deep by 36" to 48" wide by 72" to 120" high.  Shelf capacities range from 400# to 1600# per shelf.  Shelves can usually be adjusted on 1-1/2" or 2" centers depending on the punching of the particular manufacturer's post.

With "Clip-Type" Steel Shelving, it is necessary to attach either cross-bracing or sheet metal to the backs and sides of the units for front-to-back and side-to-side stability.  If cross-bracing is used, it is known as an open shelf unit.  If sheet metal is used, it is known as a closed shelf unit.

This type of shelving is known for its ease of stocking, product visibilty, configurability, and ease of adjustment.  It is best suited to store small to medium sized items, whether they be sales inventory items or maintenance or repalcement parts.

Many types of Shelving Accessories are available to provide organization and separation of your particular items within the shelves, such as Shelf Dividers, Cardboard Bin Boxes, Plastic Totes, Metal File Boxes, Add-On Drawers - to name a few.

Closed steel shelving is ideal for maintenance areas or parts storage areas with the closed backs of the units creating a secure perimeter around an enclosed work/storage area which can be accessed by erecting a wire partition with a man door and/or a sliding door across one end of the area.  Possible layouts and configurations are virtually limitless as long as you consider appropriate aisle widths for movement within the area and easy access to transport your stored material both into and out of the area.

Please feel free to contact me by phone or email with any questions you might have, such as with area layout and shelving design.
